Charles (Charlie) Kelly Spell, Jr.
October 21, 1938 - May 10, 2022
It is with heavy hearts, angels called Charles (Charlie) Kelly Spell, Jr., to be surrounded by the Lord's love on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Born October 21, 1938 to Charles Kelly Spell, Sr. and Deliah Menard in Crowley, Louisiana. Charlie is survived by sons, Jeff Spell and Marcus Spell of Washington and their children; sisters, Diane Richardson, Sue Leger, and Connie Spell, all of Louisiana, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In his younger years, you could find Charlie on the closest baseball field, setting many records he holds to this day. Subsequently, serving his country in the US Army, and pitching for Fort Benning's 428th Medics, throwing three no-hitters, was a stepping stone until he ultimately signed a professional baseball contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1958. A shoulder injury prevented advancement passed Triple A, closing out his professional career in Spokane, Washington, the Dodger's farm club in the Pacific Coast League. He called Sioux City, Iowa home before relocating to Houston, Texas with his best friend and wife, Jackie Vopat Spell, where they spent nearly 40 years of living out their dreams. Charlie's passion of baseball continued by participating in numerous softball teams right up to his retirement from a career in Materials Management. He will be dearly missed by all those who were so blessed to have had known him as a man of integrity, humility, compassion, honor, respect and love. May his memory be eternal.
