Sister Carolyn Mouton, RSCJ

July 7, 1928 - December 21, 2021

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 21, 2022 at 10:00am in the Academy of the Sacred Heart Chapel for Sr. Carolyn “Lyn” Mouton, RSCJ, who died December 21, 2021 in Atherton, California. Sister Mouton’s cousin, the Rev. Tom Voorhies of Sacred Heart Parish in Ville Platte will officiate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery on the Academy grounds. Lyn was born in Lafayette on July 7, 1928 and attended Mt. Carmel school and served as Class President in her senior year. She graduated from the College of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau in 1948 and entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Kenwood in Albany, NY. Lyn was the thirteenth Mouton to enter the Society and pronounced her First Vows on May 14, 1953 and her Final Vows in Rome on February 9, 1959. Lyn served the Society in many roles including teaching assignments in St. Louis, San Juan, Puerto Rico, Houston and her beloved Grand Coteau where she served at teacher, Mistress of Studies and Mistress General. She earned an MA from the Weston School of Theology which prepared her for role as a Pastoral Associate at St. Edmond’s parish in Richard for many years. Her move to San Diego included the Director of Evangelization for two parishes in Poway, California followed by ten-year hospital chaplaincy at Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Lyn retired from active ministry in 2005 and resided at the Sacred Heart Oakwood Community in Atherton until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, F. Xavier and Mildred Mouton, her sister Mildred “Susie” Cross and her brothers Fred Mouton and Rev. Msgr. Charles Burton “Burt” Mouton. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, John (Donna) Cross, Carolyn (Mike) Suttle, Paul Cross, Chris (Leslie) Mouton, Marc (Cecile) Mouton and Andrew (Darcy) Mouton and her very special cousins, Virginia Conques Landry, Lucille Bechet Maroney and Claudette Bechet Sibille. The Mouton family extends special thanks to the staff at Oakwood who provided such wonderful care to Lyn during her time there.
