Verna L. Derouen Hebert

September 17, 1935 - August 18, 2021

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 1:00 PM in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Lafayette, for Verna L Hebert, the former Verna Derouen. Verna was 85 when she passed away on Wednesday, August 18, 2021 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loving family. Reverend Kyle White, Pastor of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church will serve as Celebrant of the Mass. Visitation will be observed at Martin & Castille DOWNTOWN location, 330 St. Landry St., Lafayette, La. 70506 on Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM. A Rosary will be prayed in the Funeral Home on Saturday, August 21, 2021 at 11:00 AM. In order to help keep the community safe, the family has requested that all guests wear facial coverings and maintain social distancing at the funeral home. Thank you for understanding during this unprecedented time. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum with her beloved husband, Raywood. A native of Abbeville, La., Verna Hebert was born in 1935 and attended Maurice High School ('53). Shortly thereafter she met Raywood J. Hebert who would become her loving husband for over 60 years. The two lived in Abbeville until Ray was drafted into the United States Army. Together they lived at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas and later returned to Lafayette. In 1975, Verna and Ray started Gulf South Lumber, where Verna worked as a bookkeeper for over 20 years along with her son, Jimmy. Verna was a devoted parishioner of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church and spent much of her time in prayer, enjoying word search puzzles, and fishing in Butte La Rose. She spent most of her recent years with her long-time friend, Eva Baudoin, where the two enjoyed playing dice and cards, and enjoying good food and company. She was known for her love of cooking, making preserves and pralines, and filling the hearts and stomachs of those around her. Her kind heart, humble spirit, and service of others will be greatly missed. Left to cherish her memory is her son, James "Jimmy" Hebert and his wife, Cherie; her grandson, Jacob Gauthier and his wife Merry King; granddaughter, Jamie Hebert; her great-grandchildren, John Gray and Vivienne Gauthier and Nathan, Sean and Thomas Neville; her brother, Curvis Derouen; her sister, Belinda Harrington and her husband Oren; her sister, Tammy Hebert and her husband Richard; her brother, Harry Broussard and his wife Jane; her sister-in-law, Annie Derouen; and numerous nieces, nephews and God-children. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Raywood Joseph Hebert; her mother, Lelias Touchet Broussard; her father, Adras Derouen; step-father, Walter Broussard; her brother, Jeffery Derouen. Pallbearers will be Jacob Gauthier, Kip Derouen, Darrell Guidry, John C. Johnson, Tim Duhon and John LeBlanc.
