December 31, 1925 - February 6, 2022
Mercedes Delores Morgan Sterling, age 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 6, 2022 surrounded by family. A private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Mrs. Sterling is survived by her only child, Carol Olivia Mills and her husband, Michael Ward Mills, Sr, her three grandsons, Michael Ward Mills, Jr. (Michelle), Andrew Sterling Mills, and Morgan Price Mills (Kelly), and two great grandsons, Michael Ward Mills, III and Samuel Adam Mills, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Major Harry William Sterling, Jr., her parents and her siblings Emma Morgan Haney, Marcella Morgan Gantz and Stephen Morgan, Jr. Mrs. Sterling was born on December 31, 1925 in Pittsburgh, PA, the youngest of four children born to Stephen and Susan (Wisnewski) Morgan. Her mother died at a young age, and her father married Vera Morgan who became their beloved second mother. Mrs. Sterling received both her undergraduate (1950) and graduate degrees (1955) in education from the University of Pittsburgh where she met her husband Harry, a career army officer. She taught in public schools in Pittsburgh, PA, in Kaiserslautern, Germany for the Department of Defense, and later in Redford, Michigan. Mrs. Sterling and her husband loved to travel and his military career took them to many places in the U.S. and abroad. Wherever they lived, Mrs. Sterling was active in the arts community and public education until her retirement. A life-long learner, a woman of great faith, wisdom and resolve, her greatest joy was her family, especially her three grandsons with whom she and her husband spent many happy hours. In her final years, some of her favorite memories were of those yearly family trips to the beach in Florida when the boys were young and being able to attend all three of her grandsons’ college graduations. The family wishes to thank those who have prayed for and ministered to Mrs. Sterling and her family during this final season of her life, especially, Chatora Williams, Vicky Folse, LouAnna Dugas, Acadian Hospice staff, Avanti Senior Living staff, and her Bayou Church family.
